Identification of Cellulosic Fibres by FTIR Spectroscopy I: Thread and Single Fibre Analysis by Attenuated Total Reflectance

چکیده
The ability to accurately identify fibres is of importance to conservators, allowing the most appropriate methods of treatment to be employed. Our research has concentrated on the development of an ATR FT-IR spectroscopic technique for the characterisation of cellulosic (plant) fibres. Six species of fibre were examined, taken largely from the bast group (flax, hemp, jute and ramie), along with cotton and sisal. Initially, unprocessed fibres were considered; subsequently, processed fibres from a variety of sources were examined. Peak intensity ratio techniques were employed to differentiate the fibre types on the basis of relative lignin content with respect to other cellular components. It was found that for each of the species of fibre, the ratios fell within characteristic ranges.

The applicability of gallic acid loaded zein (Ze-GA) electrospun fibre mats towards potential active food packaging material was evaluated. The surface chemistry of the electrospun fibre mats was determined using X-ray photon spectroscopy (XPS). The electrospun fibre mats showed low water activity and whitish colour. The surface of carbon fabric (CF) was treated with nanoparticles (NPs) of Ytterbium fluoride (YbF3) (40‐80nm size) in various amounts (0, 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5wt%) to improve its wettability with a Polyetherimide (PEI) matrix. The effect of treatment on the fibres of the CF was also studied by adhesion testing and fibre tow tension testing. An improvement in wettability with PEI and a...

متن کاملInvestigation of the potential utility of single-bounce attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy in the analysis of distilled liquors and wines.
A new Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic method based on single-bounce attenuated total reflectance (SB-ATR) spectroscopy was developed for the analysis of distilled liquors and wines. For distilled liquors, a partial least-squares (PLS) calibration was developed for alcohol determination based on the SB-ATR/FTIR spectra of mixtures of ethanol and distilled water. An independent se...
متن کاملCharacterizing Aeroallergens by Infrared Spectroscopy of Fungal Spores and Pollen
BACKGROUND Fungal spores and plant pollen cause respiratory diseases in susceptible individuals, such as asthma, allergic rhinitis and hypersensitivity pneumonitis. Aeroallergen monitoring networks are an important part of treatment strategies, but unfortunately traditional analysis is time consuming and expensive. We have explored the use of infrared spectroscopy of pollen and spores for an in...
